Malaysia has produced a remarkable generation of pianists whose artistry and versatility shine on the global stage. From concert halls in Europe and North America to prestigious venues across Asia and Australia, these musicians have captivated audiences with their technical mastery and expressive depth. Many have distinguished themselves as prize-winners in international competitions, collaborated with leading orchestras, and premiered works by contemporary composers, while also dedicating themselves to teaching and nurturing the next wave of talent. In this issue, Top 10 of Malaysia shares its list of the top 10 most talented Malaysian pianists (presented in random order), celebrating artists whose brilliance has earned international acclaim and inspired audiences worldwide.

Dr Chuan-Li Ko
Dr. Chuan-Li Ko is an internationally acclaimed pianist, educator, and artistic advisor who has performed extensively across Asia and the United States, appearing as both soloist and collaborative pianist in leading concert venues and festivals. His collaborations range from chamber recitals in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, China and the United States to innovative cross-cultural projects that bridge Western classical music with Chinese traditional instruments and contemporary compositions. Recognised internationally, Dr. Ko has served as a juror, performer, and consultant at competitions and festivals, including the Macao International Music Festival 2023 finals organised by the Asia International Music Association, Sandakan International Music Festival 2024, as well as GOCAA Music Festival 2025. He is also the co-founder and artistic advisor of the East United International Music Competition 2025, an initiative fostering artistic exchange and excellence across borders. Today, Dr Ko continues to represent Malaysia with distinction on the global stage, inspiring audiences and nurturing the next generation of musicians through his artistry, teaching and leadership.
Bridget Yee
Malaysian pianist Bridget Yee has quickly established herself as one of the country’s most promising young artists. She is the winner of the Windsor International Piano Competition and the Beecham International Piano Competition. At 17, she received the Fellowship Diploma – the highest performance qualification from Trinity College London. In 2023, she was named “Successful Sarawakian from Overseas” by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry & Performing Arts, and in 2024 she was awarded the Kerr Memorial Prize from the Royal Over-Seas League. Bridget recently made her concerto debut with the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall in Kuala Lumpur. She has performed internationally across Europe, Asia and America, including concert tours in the UK and Switzerland. Her performances have been featured on BBC Radio and France’s national radio. She is currently pursuing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London on a full scholarship and continues to represent Malaysia on the global stage.


Tengku Mohamad Hadif
Tengku Mohamad Hadif made his concerto debut with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in 2018. His most significant accolades include the Gold Medalist title at the 1st E-Artium Piano Competition and Festival 2021 Malaysia and the 1st runner-up in the 2nd ASWARA International Piano Competition. He was hailed as “The Most Promising Malaysian Pianist” in the 6th ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition and distinguished himself as a finalist of the Piano Island International Piano Competition in 2022. He was appointed a Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra pianist in 2015 and has performed numerous orchestral and chamber works. In early 2023, he participated in the Erasmus+ Mobility Program in Estonia for a 5-month exchange programme with the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and received guidance under Sten Lassmann. He also debuted with the UCSI Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Ke-Jin Ye. Recently, he made his debut performing Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F Major under Datuk Mustafa Fuzer Nawi with Orkestra Kuala Lumpur.xt
Foo Mei Yi
Winner of the 2013 BBC Music Magazine Best Newcomer Award, Foo Mei Yi is an internationally acclaimed pianist celebrated for her eclectic repertoire and fearless artistry. She has performed on five continents with leading orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic, and Fort Worth Symphony, and appeared at major festivals including the Lucerne Festival, Ultraschall Berlin, Born Creative Tokyo, Punkt Festival in Norway, and London’s Southbank Centre Music of Today. Her recordings on Sony, Naxos and Odradek have earned critical praise from The Times, The Independent, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Klassik Magazine. Born in Malaysia and now based in the UK, Mei Yi is a professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and previously served as Artist-in-Residence at Maynooth University in Ireland. She was awarded the Setiawan Tuanku Muhriz medal for her contributions to the arts. In 2025, she founded the Nine Arts Festival in Negeri Sembilan, where she serves as Music Director.


Tay Cher Siang
Tay Cher Siang started his piano lessons in classical music before pursuing his musical journey as a jazz pianist. Tay has toured extensively with his band WVC – Malaysian Jazz Ensemble and a multinational band Unit Asia, performing in countries such as North America, Europe and Asia. Over the years, he has released a total of eleven original albums and collaborated with various artists and singers in live performances and recordings, producing 45 albums to date. Tay has won five Kaki Seni-Cameronian Arts Awards, Malaysia’s most prestigious awards for performing arts, for his compositions and performances. In 2025, Tay performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas. As a composer and music director, Tay has contributed to movie soundtracks, musical productions and theatre works, including the Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians. Tay also curated music programmes for live music venues such as The Venue, Royal Selangor and Titi Jazz & Music.
Hao Zi Yo
Hao Zi has received widespread recognition for her remarkable sensitivity and sense of colour. Since young, her love for music brought her to various festivals across the globe. At the age of 12, she was invited to perform at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall as a gold medallist of the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition. Her composition “Bustling City and Peaceful Suburb” was chosen to represent Malaysia at the Yamaha APJOC concert 2007. Currently based in London, Hao Zi is a Young Steinway Artist and continues to perform around Europe, in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Kings Place. She appeared with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, premiered Arnold Griller’s Concertino “Introduction, Cakewalk and Allegro” and also made appearances on BBC Radio 3’s “In Tune”. Hao Zi’s longterm exploration of music and colours include creating a version of piano pieces for percussion, voice and piano improvisations, and her upcoming debut album features impressionistic music by Ravel and Albeniz.


Yim Shanhui
Yim Shanhui is an internationally award-winning pianist and singer-songwriter whose musical journey was nurtured by her mother, a music educator. Her artistry has gained worldwide recognition, winning gold awards at the Beijing International Piano Competition and the Hong Kong International Youth Performance Arts Festival, and most notably being crowned Winner of the 2024 Shanghai Piano Competition. Her career has brought her to prestigious stages across the globe, including London’s Menuhin Hall, Steinway’s Horowitz Recital Hall in Shanghai, and Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music. She has further honed her craft through masterclasses with world-renowned pianists, shaping her artistic voice and global presence. Since 2024, Shanhui has represented Kawai as a Piano Artist and Ambassador in Malaysia. In 2025, she was appointed adjudicator for the Singapore International Music Competition in Asia Pacific International Arts Festival 2025, solidifying her influence across Asia’s music scene. Beyond the concert stage, she is also a songwriter and composer whose debut single aired on RTM, with TV theme songs featured on 8TV.
Ian Goh Bin Wei
Ian Goh is an acclaimed concert pianist who has performed with the Missouri State Symphony Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre Orchestra, Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra, The Sixteen Strings Quartet and DSCH String Quartet. He is the Co-Founder and Director of Claviera, Malaysia’s award-winning music programme for children, and the Founding Artistic Director of Claviera School. His artistic development reflects collaborations with internationally recognised pianists such as Adam Gyorgy and Bernadene Blaha, and training with acclaimed mentors including Ng Chong Lim, Dr. Wei-Han Su from Missouri State University and Julian Martin from Juilliard School. Beyond the stage, he serves on juries of more than 100 competitions across 15 countries, Ian also co-founded the Gold Star International Music Competition, with preliminaries in 10 countries. He also appears as piano faculty and teaching artist at international festivals and camps in the USA, China, South Korea, Italy, Indonesia and Vietnam — reflecting a global presence spanning North America, Europe and Asia and mentoring pianists worldwide.


Melody Quah
Described as a “poet with titanium fingers” by the Vancouver Sun, Melody Quah has performed extensively on the stages of her native Malaysia as well as across Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. Quah’s music career encompasses a wide range of activities—soloist, recitalist, collaborative pianist, chamber musician, educator, adjudicator, masterclass clinician and music director. A prizewinner of the 7th International Paderewski Competition held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, she has appeared in recitals at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, and as chamber musician at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theatre. Quah has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras worldwide, including the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, Pomeranian Philharmonic in Poland, and various Australian and American ensembles. She has premiered over two dozen works by living composers and commissioned pieces from artists across Southeast Asia, with recordings currently in production. Additionally, she has recorded music by Tom DeLio and Baljinder Sekhon, released on Neuma Records and the Blue Griffin label.
Vincent Ong
Vincent Ong is a remarkable young pianist whose journey began in Penang at just four years old, when he discovered an unstoppable passion for classical music. From that moment, his artistry flourished through countless concerts, competitions, masterclasses and music festivals. His success was marked by winning the 2018 International Taipei Maestro Piano Festival, a triumph that established him as one of Malaysia’s brightest musical prodigies. In 2019, he captivated audiences at the grand Taipei National Concert Hall, delivering a powerful performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Yao-Yu Wu with the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Guided by the legendary Malaysian maestro Ng Chong Lim and the esteemed Prof. Natalia Trull of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Vincent continues to refine his brilliance. He has also absorbed wisdom from world-class pianists such as Boris Berman, Boris Slutsky, Ilana Vered, and many more, cementing his place as a rising star of international acclaim.
