Louis Vuitton Dropped A Sweater Decked Out With Puppets, But At What Cost?

Feb 26, 2021 | Fashion, Luxury

When Louis Vuitton dropped of their newest collection that just so happens to feature a black jumper adorned with 14 large crocheted puppets sewn into the seams, did they expect the wave of astonishment and disbelief that would come from the public over the release? Did they think it had anything to do with the fact that it also just so happens to come with a hefty price tag of $8,000?

Maybe not to this extent. Or maybe this was part of their plan along.

Either way, fashion has always been about pushing past preconceived ideas and norms of what is considered “in,” and for years now, high-end labels have been on a roll with pieces that may not always be practical but do get people talking.

And when Vogue Paris shared photos of the product on their Twitter page, there was talk alright, with social media users giving their two cents on the matter.

“In today’s edition of fashion being disconnected from reality (which is also wasteful)… a Louis Vuitton puppet sweater. Infinitely worse than the 3k Gucci sweater that looked exactly like my high school cheerleading sweater,” stated Senza Tempo on Twitter.

Some users even declared how they could have easily recreated this exact look with some safety pins and their ‘old stuffies’ for a fraction of the cost. “How hard can attaching your old stuffies to your sweater be?” tweeted @TikyYati in response.

“I think I can get all the components at Walmart and after a few stitches I can make it for 24.99! I sell it for $50.00 and I’m making a million,” wrote Carolyn Kent Leach on Facebook.

Other quirky pieces from the collection include a $6,100 puppet varsity jacket and $7,450 puppet hoodie, all a part of Virgil Abloh’s Spring/Summer 2021 Tokyo show. According to the French fashion label, ‘playful puppets’ are a ‘major theme’ this season.

I’m losing my mind over the Louis Vuitton varsity jacket with puppets sewed on it,” quipped @vikkibtsyspider on Twitter.

Users also couldn’t help pointing out the model’s unamused expression in her rebuttal, jokingly commenting, ‘we understand why he looks so upset’ and that he ‘looked embarrassed’ wearing the rather eccentric jumper.

Not everyone had something bad to say about the sweater though, with one user expressing her intrigue over the uniqueness of the design and that she would ‘never be lost without a soft toy.’ At least someone’s looking at the brighter side of things.

Hey, it’s like the old saying goes; there’s no such thing as bad publicity. I mean we’re all talking about it aren’t we?
