The Clifton Collection by Baume & Mercier Celebrates The Chinese New Year

Jan 5, 2026 | Timepieces & Jewellery

Baume & Mercier celebrates the Chinese New Year, which will begin on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The Year of the Fire Horse – this year’s zodiac sign – has inspired an exclusive edition of the Clifton collection (Clifton 10839), limited to 100 timepieces, which will become available at the end of November. Symbolising freedom and energy, a majestic horse appears to gallop along the wide date aperture at 6 o’clock, replacing the even-numbered days. It brings momentum to the Arabic numerals and Chinese characters representing the odd-numbered days. Gold adds a warm glow to the details on the dial and creates a harmonious colour contrast, like the flamboyant red that brightens the back of the strap.

This elegant, spirited, high-tech watch is equipped with a Baumatic Manufacture (BM13-1975A COSC) movement and a COSC-certified chronometer.

A timepiece dedicated to festivities

The Chinese New Year will begin on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Baume & Mercier celebrates the sharing spirit of this occasion which inspired the House to create an exclusive edition of the Clifton collection. The Fire Horse – this year’s zodiac sign – is brought to life through a thoughtful pursuit of design and technical excellence, driven by the self-winding Baumatic Manufacture movement and a chronometer certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute). This high-performance, spirited timepiece will delight the gentleman apprised of aesthetic refinement for whom the collection is destined.

The Clifton 10839, released in a limited edition of just 100, will be made available at the end of November.

The Year of the Fire Horse and the Baume & Mercier spirit of design

The seventh of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, the horse of the 2026 New Year has fire as its element. Its association with the sun helps bring out the full power of the boundless energy and freedom that characterise this majestic, noble animal.

The new Clifton 10839 expresses this vitality through the meticulous crafting of the dial. The date aperture at 6 o’clock is enlarged to display the date both in Arabic numerals and Chinese characters, and to represent the even-numbered dates with images of a dashing horse (as the Middle Kingdom favours even numbers and dates). Each figure is shown in a different position so that, if the disk were to spin rapidly, it would create the illusion of a single galloping horse. This elegant, sought-after design subtly echoes the idea of boldness and fiery momentum.

The case back is also adorned with a galloping stallion. The golden transfer silhouette appears to burst through the protective sapphire crystal, which is fastened with four screws and may be custom-engraved. In addition to these distinctive features, the Clifton asserts its round case in a 40 mm diameter with a thickness of 11.3 mm. Like the crown, it is crafted in satin-finished stainless steel. It is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-glare coating on both sides.

Each detail reveals the creativity and quality crafting inherent to Baume & Mercier.

A tribute to the traditional colours of China

The bold contrasts of the Clifton 10839 aesthetic bring it a great deal of character and vibrancy, like this year’s emblematic animal. The timepiece features a dark grey dial which glows with the gradated and lacquered finishes that bring it depth and life. Its understated beauty is galvanised by details that carry forth classic Chinese colour codes.

Gold tone enhances the central crosshairs and minute track. It also highlights the faceted, trapezoidal, slightly elongated riveted indexes, as well as the alpha-shaped hour and minute hands and the seconds hand.

Red – a hue heralding happiness, good fortune and success – enlivens the flamboyant lining of the strap, crafted in black alligator with all-square scales and grey overstitching on the outside.

The interchangeable strap may be replaced without the use of tools thanks to a very reliable spring bar system.

Its stainless steel triple folding buckle is equipped with security push-pieces.

The energy of the Baumatic Manufacture movement and COSC certification

The high-tech Clifton 10839 movement rounds out the beauty and refinement of this exclusive timepiece. The self-winding Baumatic Manufacture movement (BM13-1975A COSC) drives the mechanism in an exceptionally precise stride. It offers a strong resistance to everyday magnetic fields, up to 1500 Gauss, and its chronometer is certified by the COSC ((Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute). It trots steadily to a frequency of 4Hz (28 800 vph). The calibre offers a remarkable freedom of autonomy thanks to its five-day (120-hour) power reserve, and is water-resistant to 5 ATM (approximately 50 m).

The sophisticated finishes of this movement can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back: circular-grained bridges, a sandblasted and snailed baseplate, an openworked oscillating weight adorned with Côtes de Genève and snailed decorations, and a unique Baume & Mercier engraving.

It’s time to celebrate. Baume & Mercier is proud to present this new Clifton timepiece, demonstrating the artistic sensibility with which it regards each of life’s most stirring, powerful occasions.
